Puppy Mills (小狗製造廠)

Puppy Mills

  • Puppy Mills, called Puppy Farms in some countries, might be better termed “puppy factories”.
  • These are terms to refer to places where many female dogs are kept breeding to produce lots of pups for the pet trade.
  • The dogs of all ages are kept in poor conditions, often unsanitary, small cages or enclosures, with inadequate attention to health and welfare, with the purpose of churning out lots of puppies, usually supposedly pedigree, to minimize expenses and maximize profit by selling them as pets.
  • Infectious diseases from inadequate veterinary care and vaccination and health programmes, as well as inherited diseases and deformities from inbreeding and other causes, are all too common in this business.
  • The inbreeding and the poor start to life can also increase behavioural problems, including more aggressive tendencies.
  • Often these pups have not learned toilet training from their mothers, which is the best way to learn, because they and their mothers did not have doggy toilets etc. to use at the puppy mill.
  • Outlets may be direct sale via internet adverts or other ways, or sellers disguised as animal lovers claiming to have a pet bitch at home who had pups, or via pet shops, for example.
  • Puppy mills are found in many countries.
  • The sale of cute little puppies from such sources leads to impulse buying by people who have not put in the time and effort to learn about dogs and about keeping animals.
  • They just see a cute little puppy. Then it grows bigger if it survives the early months and becomes harder to handle and they wonder what they got.
  • The size of veterinary bills, the cost of feeding, toilet training, and so on are now discovered and not appreciated.
  • Results include abandonment and disposal of unwanted dogs.
  • Or the pups may have fatal diseases such as distemper or parvovirus disease, resulting in early death.

So —

  • Think carefully before buying a pet
  • Learn and understand about keeping animals first
  • Acquire your pet from trustworthy sources
  • Really consider adopting from an animal rescue shelter
  • They should be have a full vaccination and health programme before you get them
  • Have them checked and followed up by your vet immediately
  • Commit to good animal care, disease prevention, health programme and balanced diet
  • Comply with local laws about keeping animals
